Darkling Smiles

A “chilling collection of eight tales… as scary as they are satisfying…” (Publisher’s Weekly)

A family that wins tablet computers at a deal to good to be believed…

A man who is sent across the universe, only to discover the most dangerous world in existence…

A hitman who realizes that his greatest contract is going to be himself…

A man whose child has been targeted by a cult, and must decide what he is willing to do to save those he loves…

Michaelbrent Collings brings you eight tales of people whose lives — and sometimes deaths — have fallen into decay.

Tales of the ordinary and the extraordinary, the outrageous and the banal. Tales of lives bright, lives dim.

Stories of a universe fallen, where every happiness has its opposite, and every smile will be inevitably darkled

Terminal

Michaelbrent Collings brings you one of the “Best Reads of 2019” (Horror After Dark); a “Top 10 Read of 2019” (Sci-fi & Scary)…

 ***

All passengers, please prepare for departure…

An employee, a cop, and six passengers; a prisoner, a stowaway, and a madman.

These are the people waiting at the Lawton bus terminal.

Mostly late-night travelers who want nothing more than to get to their destinations, and employees who want nothing more than to get through the graveyard shift.

But when a strange, otherworldly fog rolls in, the night changes to nightmare. Because something hides in the fog. Something powerful. Something strange. Something… inhuman.

Soon, those in the terminal have been cut off from the rest of the world. No phones, no computers. Just ten strangers in the terminal… and The Other.

The Other is the force in the mist. The Other is the thing that has captured them. And The Other wants to play a game.

The rules are simple:

  1. The people in the terminal must choose a single person from among them. That person will live. The rest will die.
  2. Anyone who attempts to leave the terminal before the final vote will die.
  3. The final vote… must be unanimous.

A nightmare. And getting worse, because the best way to make a vote unanimous… is to kill the other voters.

Welcome to the Terminal.

The Sword Chronicles: Child of Ash

THE STUNNING CONCLUSION TO THE SWORD CHRONICLES TRILOGY!

Her friends are gone. Ansborn is dying. And there is only one place Sword can go: to the Gods.

Planning to destroy those responsible for the deaths of her friends and the destruction of Ansborn, Sword will descend into a world unlike any she has ever known. Aided by the two most dangerous enemies she has ever faced, she will climb below the clouds that have hidden Ansborn from the world for a thousand years. And she will kill anyone and anything she finds.

But Sword does not know the truth: that Ansborn is a construct of a great nation that passed away a thousand years before she was born. That the world she knew is a vast experiment; a second chance for a lost race.

Sword is about to face the greatest enemy she has yet encountered. An enemy that has lived for countless generations. An enemy that has destroyed all who dared challenge it. An enemy that Sword must defeat; for she is the last hope of Ansborn, and of every living person.

She is Sword, and only she . . . can save the world.

The Sword Chronicles: Child of Sorrows

The Sword Chronicles: Child of Sorrows

Sword thought it was over…

She thought that when she killed the Chancellor and ended the corrupt reign of the Emperor, that everything would get better. That the suffering would end in Ansborn. That the people would be free.

But now a new terror has been born. A trio of warriors who live only for vengeance, who know only hate, have set their sights on Sword and on those she holds dear. They are powerful, they are deadly, and they are impossible to kill.

And worst of all, they are but harbingers of what is to come. Because after a thousand years, the unknown enemy that lies below the mountains of Ansborn is at last on the move. And it is coming for them all.

Death from among them.

Death from below.

And only one person – one Sword – has any chance of stopping it.

The Sword Chronicles: Child of the Empire

A kingdom will fall by the sword…

She is a Dog – one of the many children and teens across the empire of Ansborn who have been sentenced to fight in the arenas. There they fight in battle after battle until they die for the sport of the people of Ansborn – an empire built atop the peaks of five mountains.

But one day she picks up a knife… and everything changes.

She discovers she is a Greater Gift – one of a handful of magic users with powers so great they have only two choices: to join the Empire as one of its premier assassins, or die as a threat to the Empire itself.

She is no longer a Dog. Now, she is Sword. And she will soon realize that in this Empire, not all is what it seems. Good and evil collide, and she can never be sure whom to trust – not even herself.

She holds life in her hands for some. Brings death by her blade to others.

She is a killer.
She is a savior.

She is Sword.

The Loon

The Loon

Paul Wiseman has a tough job.

As the chief of staff for the Crane Institute, he oversees over one hundred of the worst men in the world. Madmen all, they are housed in the super-max psychiatric prison known to its staff and inmates as “The Loon.”

But that isn’t the worst of it. A freak storm is on its way, a storm that threatens to cut off all communications with the outside world. Three days alone in a prison where any one of the inmates would be only too happy to kill you. Three days alone with nothing but snow and death outside the doors.

Three days alone with an evil beyond imagining.

Now, the inmates are disappearing. From cells built to be escape-proof, they are disappearing as though by magic, leaving behind nothing but blood. And lots of it.

There is something loose in The Loon. Something worse than the prisoners. Something worse than the devil itself. Evil has come to call…at The Loon.
